Flamengo's women fought until the final whistle, created the main opportunities of the second half and pressured Corinthians in search of an equalizer. However, the São Paulo team relied on a great performance from goalkeeper Nicole and won 1-0, on Monday night (3), at Luso-Brasileiro, for the 14th round of the Brazilian Women's Championship. The only goal of the match was scored by Jhonson in the first half. Now, Flamengo will have three more rounds to seek a place in the knockout phase of the competition.
The game
In the opening minutes of the match, Corinthians managed to maintain possession in the attacking half and forced goalkeeper Vivi Holzel into a great save in the eighth minute. In Flamengo's first good attack, Fernanda received the ball at the edge of the area, turned, and shot, but Nicole made a comfortable save.
Better in the early stages of the match, Corinthians opened the scoring in the 11th minute. In a quick counter-attack, Belén Aquino outpaced the left flank and crossed to Jhonson, who was unmarked to finish into the goal: 1-0.
Trailing behind, Flamengo pushed their lines forward and found more space to attack. The São Paulo team also created some dangerous opportunities, and the first half ended with the visitors in the lead.
After the break, the Flamengo women's team took control of the match and pressured Corinthians in search of an equalizer. The Rubro-Negro even took four consecutive corner kicks, keeping the São Paulo team pinned back in their defensive half.
Around the 20-minute mark, Day Rodríguez received her second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Corinthians with one less player.
At 23 minutes, Mariana received the ball on the right side of the area and attempted a cross, but the ball went towards the goal. Alert, Nicole flew to make a great save. Immediately afterwards, Fernanda shot across goal from inside the area, and the Corinthians goalkeeper again appeared well to prevent the equalizer.
In the final minutes, Flamengo intensified the pressure even further and created new opportunities, but the ball just wouldn't go in. Despite their superiority in the second half and their numerical advantage on the field, the Flamengo women's team ended up defeated at Luso-Brasileiro and remain in contention for a spot in the knockout stage of the Brazilian Women's Championship.
