In soccer, it's often said that a strong, homogeneous squad is the foundation for success, especially in points-based championships. And in basketball, it's no different. Coach Paulo Chupeta and his players, five-time Rio de Janeiro champions, South American champions, and two-time national champions, emphasize the strength of the red-and-black team in the race for a third consecutive Brazilian title.

This season, Flamengo is third in the NBB standings, tied on points with second-place Minas Tênis, but behind on average (the average of points conceded and scored). However, the team has been on a championship-worthy run in recent rounds: winning six of seven games—including one against Minas. The only loss was to Brasília, runner-up in the last two editions and leading the championship this year.

"After the loss to Brasília, we talked a lot, and the team has been improving. The group is growing, and that helps the players individually. When the group grows, everyone grows. It's a credit to the group," analyzed point guard Fred, who scored 20 points in the victory against Saldanha da Gama last Sunday in Espírito Santo.

Coach Paulo Chupeta also highlighted the consistency of the red-and-black squad. According to him, the team's performances, even without key players like center Coloneze, have been very good, giving hope that the club can indeed win its third national championship.

"The squad is small, with some injuries, but we're still getting good results. Against Saldanha, I thought I wouldn't use Duda, but I did, and then I rested him and other players. Now, Hélio is coming back to get back into rhythm, he came in well again... The strength of the group is very important," he explained.

Flamengo's basketball team won't return to the court until next Wednesday. The players have a day off this Monday and Tuesday. Their next match for Novo Basquete Brasil isn't until the 23rd, against Joinville.
