It took just one game for Flamengo's winger Fred Duarte to earn the affectionate nickname "Varejinho" from Flamengo fans. Since joining the team, the player, who shares the same hairstyle as Cleveland Cavaliers winger Anderson Varejão, has been called that by his teammates. But it was last Wednesday (17/11), in Flamengo's NBB debut and also his first match for the team, that Fred was "officially baptized."
At 19 years old and 6'5", the winger arrived at Flamengo after two seasons with Torrejon, a team in the third division of Spanish basketball. Fred represented the Brazilian national team at the under-16, under-18, and under-19 levels and is now considered one of the red-and-black club's prospects.
Besides his hair, Fred has a wide smile, which also reminds us of Varejão. A fan of the NBA forward, "Varejinho" is loving the comparisons.
"It's an honor to be compared to Varejão. He's not only a great player, but also a great person. I know he worked hard to get where he is, and I intend to one day follow in his footsteps and play in the best league in the world," said Fred, who is excited about the opportunity to play for Flamengo. "It's one of the most beloved clubs in the world, with wonderful fans, and I hope to be able to show my best here," he added.
In the game against Vila Velha, Varejinho played 10 minutes and 18 seconds, grabbed four rebounds (two on defense and two on offense), committed two fouls, and drew one. After the game, he received a visit from Ângelo Varejão, Anderson's brother, who lives in Vitória. Ângelo was impressed by the resemblance and presented the Flamengo player with a shirt featuring a caricature of Anderson and a wig imitating the NBA player's hair.
"My debut couldn't have been better," Varejinho celebrated.
