The traditional Boca Juniors fell by the wayside. One of the most storied teams in Brazilian basketball, Franca, couldn't compete. Argentina's Quimsa, the current champion of the South American League, was also no match. Flamengo's performance in the 2010 edition of the competition, currently being held in Rio de Janeiro, is commendable. But positive results didn't come easily.
Point guard Duda believes that the desire and attitude of the red-black team made the difference. The number 10 from Gávea explained that this made the difference in the semifinal against Quimsa and must continue to be the case in the final against Brasília, Sunday (28.11), at HSBC Arena.
"The tone of the game was our attitude. From the start, we showed what we were made for. We knew we were playing at home. We have to pressure the referee. It's part of the game. Only we know what we went through playing in Argentina. We maintained our attitude, our defense, we imposed the rhythm, and we deserved the victory," he explained.
Fred agrees. He recalls the difficulties the team faced when playing in the 2009 League finals in Argentina, in Santiago del Estero. According to him, now they need to capitalize on the home advantage to pursue their second title.
"When we play away, we feel the atmosphere, the mood. It's very different. We wanted to do that here. We talked a lot in the locker room. At first, we even got a little confused and ended up committing a lot of technical fouls. But the team got it together and, after that, managed a good game, managed the lead, and now it's time to rest and think about the decision," he added.
