A Flamengo youth athlete participates in the NBA Americas Team Camp
Kayo Gonçalves was selected among 40 youth players as one of the top athletes born between 1999 and 2000 in Brazil

A member of Flamengo's under-17 team—standing at 2,01'40" tall—center Kayo Gonçalves is a standout in Flamengo's youth academy and the Brazilian national team, and has now earned recognition from the world's top basketball league. The NBA (National Basketball Association) selected him for the Americas Team Camp, which will host the 10 best young players from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico from August 13th to XNUMXth at the National Center for Sports Talent Development and High Performance in Mexico City. Kayo won bronze at the Minas Cup this week.
Kayo is part of the select group of ten Brazilians who were called up for the event for being the main athletes born in 1999 and 2000 in their countries, selected by the NBA itself, the basketball federations and the event sponsor.
"Participating in an event of this magnitude is crucial for the development of youth athletes like myself. The event features several foreign coaches, along with NBA players and assistant coaches who will work with us over the four days. It's a great opportunity for us to showcase what we've learned here in Brazil and take it abroad," said Kayo.
The camp consists of four days of intense skills training and competitions led by NBA players and coaches, featuring Mexican Jorge Gutierrez (Brooklyn Nets), Italian Danilo Gallinari (Denver Nuggets), and American Quincy Pondexter (New Orleans Pelicans). Also participating in the camp will be Phoenix Suns coach Earl Watson, Chicago Bulls assistant Jim Boylen, Atlanta Hawks assistant Taylor Jenkins, Pelicans assistant Fred Vinson, USA Basketball Director of Youth Development Don Showalter, and Los Angeles Clippers assistant physical conditioning coach Joe Resendez. Austin Ainge, Director of Basketball Operations, will serve as the camp director. The camp will also include local coaches selected by CONADE (Mexico's National Committee for Physical Education and Sports).
Over the four days, there will be basketball fundamentals clinics, lectures focusing on leadership and healthy living concepts, and five-on-five competitions. The event concludes with a 5-on-5 final and an All-Star Game, a festive match between the best athletes. Additionally, NBA Cares, responsible for the National Basketball League's social responsibility initiatives, will host a discussion with 80 young athletes on topics such as leadership, goals, and the importance of healthy living.
This will be the fourth edition of the Americas Team Camp, which has already taken place in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil-2010), Puerto Rico-2012 and Toronto-2014.
The youth basketball teams of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo rely on resources from their sponsors – CSN (Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional), Banco Bonsucesso and Brasil Brokers – via the Federal Incentive Law/Ministry of Sports (IR), in addition to support from the Brazilian Confederation of Clubs (CBC) resulting from the decentralization of resources originating from the Pelé Law.
