Since 2005, no one has taken FlaBasquete from the title of Rio de Janeiro champion. Champion of the League of the Americas and the Intercontinental Cup in 2014 and current four-time consecutive Brazilian champion - and the greatest national champion with five NBB CAIXA titles - the Pride of the Nation debuts in another Campeonato Carioca this Thursday (22), at 21 pm, in search of the 12th consecutive title in the tournament. The ball goes up for Flamengo x Macaé at the Hélio Maurício gym, at the Gávea social headquarters.

Preparation
The red-black cast has just returned from the 1st International Tournament of Arequipa, in Peru, which featured three friendly warm-up matches against Bahia Blanca (ARG), Elite Sports (PER), and Rio Natura Monbus (ESP). José Neto's team won the first two games and lost the last. The athletes still have the Quadrangular Super Four Rio Nordeste (buy tickets by clicking here). The competition will feature Vasco, winner of the Liga Ouro, and Basquete Cearense and Vitória, two elite Brazilian basketball teams from the Northeast. The quadrangular will take place from September 25th to 26th in Fortaleza.
Derbies
This season's edition features Flamengo, Botafogo, and Vasco da Gama, who will be the main attraction with their Rio classics. On September 30th and October 11th, they will face off against Flamengo, and on October 3rd and 14th, they will face Vasco da Gama.
Greatest champion
The red-and-black club has won 41 Rio de Janeiro titles in its history, making it the state's most successful club. Captain Marcelinho Machado is the team's most successful player, with nine Carioca trophies. The winger arrived at Gávea in 2007 and has participated in every successful campaign since.
Unforgettable ending
The entire 2007 championship was worthy of Rio de Janeiro basketball tradition, with Fluminense and Vasco boasting strong teams thanks to partnerships with Minas Gerais and Brasília, respectively, and Flamengo reinforced for the competition. It was there that the foundation of the squad that would become two-time national champions and South American champions was born in the following two seasons. Marcelinho, Wagner, Duda, Hélio, Fernando Mineiro, Amiel, and company arrived that year and were instrumental in winning the team's third Rio de Janeiro championship. Flamengo also outperformed the entire competition, suffering only one loss, to Vasco in the qualifying round.
But in the finals against the same Cruzmaltino, the Mais Querido closed the best-of-three series 2-0. While in the first match, Mengão barely made heads or tails of Vasco, winning 94-72, in the second match they were no stunner, but a narrow 75-73 victory to the delight of the Maracanãzinho fans. The standout performer in that match was Hélio, the reserve point guard who came off the bench in the first quarter to score 30 points and lead the scorer.
