Athletes from two of the world's biggest clubs met virtually last week, driven by a shared passion: basketball. Youth players from Flamengo and Benfica (Portugal) participated in an exchange program organized by the coaching staffs of both teams and conducted activities through an online meeting platform. The goal was to foster integration between young people from different cultures, focusing on the sport, during yet another difficult time for both countries, which are currently undergoing a new lockdown.

"I think it's a unique opportunity for young people to experience new cultures, talk to athletes their own age from another country, and learn how they train there, what they do. I think this exchange is very valuable. If we were to think about when we might suddenly be able to play against them in these categories, it's practically impossible. So the internet is great for bringing people together," explained Igor Meletti, coach of the red-and-black youth team.

The activity was facilitated by the Benfica committee in conjunction with the Mais Querido coaches. In addition to Igor, Mauro Macedo and Vitor Boccardo participated, as did Paulo Chupeta, the club's youth coordinator. The meeting was so fruitful that a new training session was scheduled for this week.

"It was very worthwhile, very cool. At this time when everyone is at home once again, worried, nervous, unsure if there will be a championship or training... it's also good for them to keep their minds occupied with other things, but always keeping basketball and Flamengo in focus, knowing that we're behind them, taking care of them and trying to provide the best for everyone," said Igor, adding. "We'll maintain contact with the coaching staff to exchange materials and information, and whenever possible, maintain contact between the athletes as well, which we consider very important. The more information we can provide them, the better."
