Basketball hones in on physical fitness in Gávea

Rubro-Negros are in the second week of training for the 2010/2011 pre-season

Seeking to regain control of Brazil and the Americas, Flamengo's basketball team is working hard in its preseason at Gávea. Coach Paulo Chupeta's team has been working hard for two weeks to ensure they're in top form when the ball goes up for the challenges of this season.

Point guard Hélio explains the phase the team is currently going through. According to him, these first few days of work are crucial for the team's future.

"It's a preseason we're doing, so the beginning is just like this: a lot of physical training, working hard to get results later in the season. We don't work with the ball much, just a few shots, but that's the plan. We get tired, of course, but soon tactical training will begin and everything will return to normal," he said.

Some of the training sessions are being held on the Gávea pitch, after the football team's activities.

"The field is very big. In basketball, you take a lot of short shots, but in soccer you have to maintain your grip on a much larger field. It must be difficult, especially for the wingers. They have to be very fit to handle it," added the number 5.

In addition to Hélio, Flamengo has already confirmed its players for this season: Duda, Fred, Jefferson, Teichmann, Wagner, and Baby. Marcelinho is with the Brazilian national team, which will compete in the World Cup in Turkey, and American Kyle Lamonte is expected to arrive in Rio later this week.
