It was a close call. After holding a four-point lead with 26 seconds remaining, Flamengo conceded the equalizer and was defeated by São José in overtime, 107-99 (88-88 in normal time), on Friday night (May 18.05), in São José dos Campos (SP). With the result, the best-of-five semifinal series is tied at 1-1. The two teams will face each other again on Sunday (May 20.05), at 21 pm, also in the city of São Paulo.
The fourth game takes place on May 25.05th in Tijuca. If necessary, the fifth game will be played on May 27.05th in São José dos Campos. In the first game, on May 15.05th in Tijuca, Flamengo put on a strong performance and gave their opponent no chance, winning 84-68.
Marcelinho and David Jackson led the way with 25 points each, alongside São José's Laws, who also scored 25 points. Kammerichs had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
"It was a tactical error. The team played a wonderful game, but on the last ball of regulation time, I made a bad decision. We could have cleared Dedé's ball with a foul, but we ended up giving up the equalizer on São José's three-pointer," said coach Gonzalo Garcia.
Center Kammerichs absolved the coach of blame
"The final result is painful. The team did a good job and tried to follow all the tactics the coach had planned for this game. I thank the coach for taking the blame, but it's not like that. Here, everyone wins and everyone loses, and I know that, in the decisive minutes, I made mistakes that I shouldn't have made," said the player.
São José opened up a 10-point lead twice in the first quarter (14-4 and 19-9). Little by little, Flamengo adjusted its defense and took the advantage, reaching a draw at the end, with three free throws converted by Marcelinho: 24-24. Better in the second quarter, the red-black team opened up a 33-28 lead and went into halftime leading 44-38, with 14 points from Jackson.
Flamengo opened up a nine-point lead at the start of the third quarter (51 x 42) and, despite São José closing the gap (58 x 60), the red-black team opened up a good lead at the end of the quarter: 68 x 60. In the last quarter, Flamengo dominated and, with 26 seconds remaining, Wagner converted a shot and Flamengo opened up an 86 x 82 lead. São José closed the gap to 85 x 88 and, with the last ball of the game, Dedé tied the score at 88 x 88.
In extra time, Rubro-negro took a while to get into the game and São José closed at 107 x 99.
For the next match, the expectation is for another balanced game:
"These are two very evenly matched teams, and they're getting to know each other better with each game. It's going to be another hard-fought match," concluded Gonzalo Garcia.
Flamengo started with: Hélio (3), David Jackson (25), Marcelinho (25), Kammerichs (11) and Caio Torres (16). Entered: Fred (3), Hayes (4), Duda (-), Teichmann (-) and Wagner (12).
