The slacking off is over. After nearly two months of vacation, Flamengo's basketball players finally returned to work this Monday. Supervised by physical trainer Rafael Bernardelli, the reigning five-time state champions began a fifteen-day pre-season training camp in Gávea. Still without Marcelinho and Duda, who are playing for the Brazilian and A and B national teams, and American Kyle Lamonte, who is expected to arrive in Rio next week, Hélio, Fred, Guilherme Teichmann, Wagner, Jefferson, and Baby—the only new addition to the team for now—experienced the coaching staff's planning firsthand.
After an hour of interval training to build aerobic endurance on the Gávea pitch and some fast-paced ball, the Brazilian runners-up felt the effects of a well-spent vacation and showed they'll need a lot of work to get back to their old form. That's nothing to worry the Flamengo fitness coach, who is banking on a strong preparation leading up to the start of the State Championship in late August.
"They felt the natural wear and tear that comes with being inactive for a long time. But this is absolutely normal, and in two weeks this situation changes due to the physiological impact. In this initial preparation, we will emphasize aerobic endurance and strength training," explained Rafael, who led a 3-minute continuous run session interspersed with one-minute bursts of exercise.
One of the most excited players at the return was winger Jefferson. Four kilos lighter, the Flamengo player was one of the few who remained active during the break and therefore was one of the most in good shape after his training on the field.
"I didn't stop training completely during the holidays. I was running two to three times a week on my own, so I felt really good. Of course, I'm still far from ideal fitness and form, but I'm sure I'll be 100 percent sooner than expected," said the Flamengo winger.
