After the disappointment in Santiago del Estero, where they were eliminated on Thursday by Argentina's Quimsa in a South American League match, the Flamengo men's basketball team arrives in Rio de Janeiro tonight at Galeão Airport. The new challenge is to maintain their national dominance, following their second consecutive 2008/09 championship. Coach Paulo Chupeta's team makes its debut in the New Basketball Brazil (NBB) this Sunday (November 1st) at 11 a.m. against Cetaf, from Vila Velha. The game will take place at the HSBC Arena in Barra da Tijuca, the official home of basketball for the 11/2009 season.
Built to host sporting events at the Rio 2007 Pan American Games, the HSBC Arena hosted the three playoffs in Rio de Janeiro for the final of the last NBB, where Flamengo won the season by defeating the Universo/Brasília team. The final, on June 28, attracted 15.430 fans. The renewal of the agreement between Flamengo and GL events, the company that manages the HSBC Arena, was signed at the end of September in Gávea.
Following the successful model already adopted in other countries and implemented in the NBB finals, the organizers intend to transform the games into a family-friendly experience, combining sports and fun. In some games, the program may include short musical performances and the participation of personalities from other sports or the arts in short competitions during halftime.
Tickets for the games are on sale at the HSCB Arena box office (venida Embaixador Abelardo Bueno, 3401 – Barra da Tijuca www.hsbcarena.com.br), online and at Ingresso Fácil points of sale (website www.ingressofacil.com.br), with prices ranging from R$30 to R$50 - students are entitled to half-price tickets and HSBC customers receive a 20% discount on ticket purchases (not cumulative with other discounts).
