The Brazilian national basketball team defeated Argentina 80-71 (37-34 at halftime) in the third round of the 5th Tuto Marchand Cup, which is being played at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan. The victory over its rival came at a good time, as the team lost its first two games, against Puerto Rico (66-79) and Canada (64-80). Brazil won the tournament in 2007, 2009 and 2011; in 2013, the team took bronze.
Brazil's top scorer was center João Paulo Batista, with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal. He was a standout alongside Vitor Benite, who had 12 points, three rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Marquinhos had eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Rafael Luz and Olivinha were also available for national team coach Rubén Magnano.
Brazil concludes its participation in the Tuto Marchand Cup on Thursday (27), at 18:45 pm, against the Dominican Republic. The competition is played in a single round, with the team that accumulates the most points being crowned champion. The competition serves as preparation for the Copa América, a Pre-Olympic Tournament, which begins on August 31 in Mexico City and runs until September 12.
