Flamengo's under-22 basketball team begins its quest for its third Basketball Development League (LDB) championship next Monday (29). The debut will be against São José, at 16:30 pm, at the Methodist University. The main national basketball competition has had five editions to date - with two titles for the red-and-blacks - and has revealed athletes such as Cristiano Felício, currently with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA, and Gegê Chaia, currently with Rio Claro, both former athletes of the Mais Querido. Ricardo Fischer, who joined the club for the next season, was also a champion of the tournament, with Bauru.

Coach Rodrigo Carlos, José Neto's assistant on the professional team, presented the under-22 team at the beginning of August and, in the meeting with the athletes, passed on the guidelines for the 2016/2017 season.

The sixth edition of the LDB will feature 11 teams. The Pride of the Nation is in Group A, which will be based in the city of São Bernardo do Campo (SP), alongside São José dos Campos (SP), Basquete Curitiba (PR), Extremos (PB) and Sport Club do Recife (PE). In Group B, based in São Sebastião do Paraíso (MG), its disputes begin on Tuesday (30), between Franca Basquete (SP), Limeira (SP), Rio do Sul (SC), Minas Tênis Clube (MG) and Ginástico (MG).

Flamengo has signed four young signings for the season, who will serve both the under-22 and professional teams: Leo Bishop, Lele, Pedrinho e Humberto, who was introduced alongside Ricardo Fischer.

Breeding ground for stars
Since its inception, the LDB has revealed 101 players for the teams competing in the NBB CAIXA. In its last season, 43,2% of the country's largest basketball league's players came from the under-22 competition.

Regulation
In the first phase, teams are divided into two groups and play each other in a single round. The top three teams from each side advance to the final hexagonal of the Gold Series and continue to compete for the title, while the remaining teams compete in the Silver Series. In the second phase, without carrying over the results from the initial stage, the teams face each other, also in a single round, to determine the title. The same applies to the Silver Series, which will also have its champion announced and awarded.

The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo adult basketball team relies on direct funding from its sponsor Estácio, in addition to investments from Tim via the State Sports Incentive Law/State Secretariat for Sports, Leisure and Youth (ICMS).
