Boca Juniors pulled off a surprise victory over Franca in the second game of the first day of the South American League finals, which is being played at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The traditional Argentine team left behind a dismal campaign in the Argentine Championship, currently sitting last in its group, and defeated the traditional Brazilian team 86-80.
Despite boasting the game's top scorer, Dedé, with 19 points, Franca, who led the score for much of the game, couldn't withstand Argentina's pressure. Boca, on the other hand, had Brussino and Ezugwu as standouts, with 16 points each.
Even with the loss, the São Paulo team still has a chance of securing a spot in the competition's semifinals. But to do so, they would have to defeat Flamengo, a fact that doesn't excite the players at all.
"With this defeat it became more difficult for our team, as Flamengo is much stronger than Boca Juniors and has the advantage of playing at home, but we will fight while we have the chance," said point guard Fernando.
In the stands, Flamengo watched the action attentively to avoid suffering the same setback against the Argentines. This Thursday, it will be Flamengo's turn to face Boca Juniors. The match will be at 20:30 PM, broadcast on SporTV. Before that, at 18 PM, Brasília will face Quimsa (ARG).
Boca Juniors: Moodie (13), Titarelli (8), Vega (15), Ezugwu (16), Martina (14). In came: Fierro (2), Ingles (-), Delia (-), Brussino (16), Copello (2).
Franca: Helinho (5), Rogério (11), Marcio (10), William (7), Dedé (19). Entered: Fernando (8), Ricardo Luiz (7), Vitor (11), Daniel (2).
