Uniceub/Brasília defeated Boca Juniors 82-73 (34-44) in a stunning comeback and qualified for the South American Basketball League grand final. The competition is being played at the HSBC Arena in Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro. Argentine shooting guard Moodie led all scorers with 35 points. Brasília's opponent in the final will be determined by the match between Flamengo and Quimsa, which will be played later this Saturday.
Boca Juniors dominated the first two quarters, with an excellent performance by American Moodie, who scored 21 points in that period alone. The player, however, ended up becoming the villain of the match when he was substituted and kicked his own team's medicine bag. The technical foul earned Brasília five points, which in a few seconds reduced the deficit from 15 points to ten (44-34).
Irritated, Boca Juniors coach Pablo D'Angelo benched the American for much of the second half. In less than five minutes, Uniceub tied the game at 48, quickly turned the game around, and never let go of the lead. Alex, with 29 points, was one of the players responsible for the team from the federal capital's surge in performance.
Another standout from Brasília's comeback, point guard Nezinho was one of the few who performed well in the first two quarters, scoring 12 of his 18 points. He commented on the American player's performance, who returned to the court but was unable to recover the lead lost to Brasília.
"The coach wants to punish the player and often hurts the team. Moodie was playing well, both in defense and attack, with a lot of points. Even though we were behind, our team didn't lose our heads, unlike our opponent," believes point guard Nezinho, who grabbed four rebounds.
"The physical condition isn't ideal yet. But we turned the match around quickly and won, which is more important. I believe we'll be better in January or February," says the point guard.
