Having qualified with one round to spare for the second phase of the South American League, Flamengo was defeated by Peñarol in the last round of group C. After a good first half, where they managed to impose a strong marking and impose their rhythm of play, Rubro-negro lost to the home team by 77 x 72, on the night of this Thursday (25.10), at the Poliesportivo Ilhas Malvinas gymnasium, in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.
In the next phase, with venues yet to be determined, the eight qualified teams will be divided into two groups. The first will be played from November 13th to 15th, and the second from November 20th to 22nd. Four teams (two from each group) will advance to the grand final, between December 4th and 6th.
"We came to Argentina with the goal of qualifying for the second round and the Liga de las Américas, because Flamengo needs to be in all the major competitions. We achieved our objective. Today we took the court with both teams already qualified, but we were still looking for the win. The team was focused and worked hard until the end. We had a good first half, but the third quarter ended up giving Peñarol more chances to win. And they capitalized on that. We even fought back late in the game, but the victory didn't come," said coach José Neto. "Now we'll keep working, thinking about our next goals," he concluded.
Flamengo took an 8-3 lead with eight points from Vitor Benite, and the quarter ended 20-19 for the Rio de Janeiro team. In the second quarter, with a strong defense, Flamengo opened a 12-point lead (35-23) and went into halftime leading 40-30. In the second half, Flamengo made a few attacking errors, allowing Peñarol to tie the game at 46-46 and close the quarter at 57-51. In the final quarter, the home team prevailed, winning 77-72. Benite led the way with 22 points, alongside Peñarol's Gutierrez. Caio Torres grabbed 10 rebounds.
Flamengo started with: Benite (22), Marcelinho (8), Marquinhos (7), Olivinha (11) and Shilton (5). Entered: Kojo (8), Caio Torres (8) and Gegê (3).
