On Wednesday night (01.04), the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium was the stage for another FlaBasquete triumph in the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). This time, the Rubro-Negro defeated Rio Claro, 99-74, in a match valid for the 29th - and penultimate - round of the championship's qualifying phase. Already guaranteed in the playoffs, the Mais Querido entered the court with great respect for the opponent and won the duel with a convincing victory. Meyinsse was the top scorer with 21 points and Olivinha came close to a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds.
While José Neto's men performed well for the 40 minutes of the match, halftime was the turn of the future of the Nation's Pride to put on a show with the orange ball. Students from the Sempre Flamengo Sports School played a match, accompanied by teacher Márcio Miranda, and excited the crowd by showing off the results of their classes at Gávea.
The Mais Querido's next match will be this Friday (03.04), at 20 pm, again at Tijuca Tênis Clube, against Limeira. Flamengo is counting on you to close the first phase of the NBB with a flourish, before the start of the playoffs: Buy your tickets here and get the first month free as a fan member.
The game
The match started evenly, but with Flamengo consistently maintaining the lead. Meyinsse was the standout performer for Flamengo, scoring eight points and three rebounds. The quarter ended 27-21 for the "Mais Querido." In the second quarter, the most memorable moment came with the clock stopped. After Rio Claro closed the gap, coach José Neto called a timeout. While he energetically instructed the players, the fans fell silent and listened to the instructions along with the players. This moment of synergy was followed by loud applause from the stands and a lively performance on the court.
"I pushed them; it's my job to see where the team can improve. I thought we needed to defend at that moment, and they responded very well on the court. We improved defensively and, consequently, offensively," explained José Neto, who saw Flamengo play an even second half, but ended up with a nine-point lead for his team: 50 to 41.
After the break, Flamengo came back stronger defensively. Alongside Meyinsse, Marquinhos stood out with nine points in the period, and the red-and-black team won the period 24-18, heading into the final quarter with a 13-point lead. In the final ten minutes, José Neto's team showed a hunger for the ball and extended their lead, benefiting from strong tackles by Marcelinho, Olivinha, and Felício, to surpass the 20-point lead: 99-74.
