Flamengo won and, once again, convinced, in the New Basketball Brazil (NBB) 8. On the night of this Thursday (03.12), the red-black team beat Vitória, in Salvador, at the Poliesportivo de Cajazeiras gymnasium, by 96 to 70, a score that showed the superiority of the biggest and current champion of the tournament over one of the debuting teams.
The match's historic achievement was achieved by captain Marcelinho Machado, who, in addition to a stellar performance, reached the 1,000-free throw mark in the competition's history. Other standouts on the court were Marquinhos, who topped the scoreboard with 21 points and five assists, JP Batista, with 16 points and four rebounds, and Rafael Mineiro, with 15 points.
Advantage from the start
The team took to the court with the starting five of Rafa Luz, Marquinhos, Rafael Mineiro, Jason Robinson, and Jerome Meyinsse. In the first quarter, Flamengo held off Vitória's momentum and maintained the lead throughout. In the final moments, Gegê and Marcelinho entered the court, and the veteran quickly scored his first two points. The team opened up a nine-point lead in the opening period (24-15).
Playing at home, Vitória chased the score and even led Mais Querido in the first half, until two minutes remained in the second quarter. The game became exciting, and the opposing fans pressed from the stands, but, at the end of the period, the Rio de Janeiro red-and-black team made up the small deficit and significantly increased the overall lead, thanks to two beautiful three-pointers from Gegê: 44 to 27.
At halftime, Marquinhos explained how Flamengo managed to string together offensive plays and emerge victorious in the final moments of the second quarter. "In that final stretch, we were smart, we saw the positioning of their center, who stays fixed in the paint, and we gained openings in our game," he analyzed.
The red-black winger was one of the team's highlights in the match, which heated up again in the middle of the third period, when Vitória showed a reaction and got closer in the partial (21-26), but was still more than 20 points away in total (70 to 48).
