The week couldn't have ended better for Flamengo. After losses to Brasília and Pinheiros on Wednesday (February 23.02) and Friday (February 25.02), respectively, the red-and-black team crushed Paulistano 91-82 on Sunday morning (February 27.02) at the Paulistano Club Gymnasium in São Paulo, in the eighth round of the NBB (New Basketball Brazil) return leg. Flamengo now has 15 wins in 21 games and, with the losses in Brasília and Uberlândia, has moved up to second place in the standings.
"The team had a different attitude today, we played as a group," said forward/guard Duda, who led the game with 23 points. "We were tired, but we talked and kept up the pace. Now it's time to continue working and maintain this attitude," he added.
Flamengo started the game setting a strong pace and with a consistent defense, they didn't let Paulistano play, closing the first quarter with a 19-point lead: 33 x 14. The strong red-black marking didn't let up in the second half and Flamengo went into the break winning by 51 x 32.
In the second half the story continued the same and Flamengo won the third quarter by 74 x 48. At the end of the game, taking advantage of Flamengo's fatigue, Paulistano attempted a reaction (81 x 87), but the Rio team opened up again and closed at 91 x 82.
"We felt the difficult moment and each person took on their responsibility within the team. That was the team's greatest quality today," said winger Teichmann.
The championship will have a break during Carnival and Flamengo will only return to the court on February 11.02th, against Joinville, in Joinville.
"This time without a game will be very important for our team. For the first time, we will be able to improve on what Gonzalo (Garcia, coach) has been going through in training," said Duda.
"Our team needs a little rest and a lot of training," Teichmann added.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (12), Helio (2), Duda (23), Teichmann (10) and Bábby (17). Entered: Fred (2), Átila (10), Wagner (2), Jefferson (9) and Guto (4).
