The return to Tijuca Tênis Clube was good for the Pride of the Nation. Flamengo regained its winning ways playing at home, with two good victories over two teams from Minas Gerais. If on Tuesday (03.02), Rubro-Negro beat Minas by 77 to 59, on Thursday night (05.02), José Neto's team were overwhelming and beat Uberlândia 91 to 58. The fans had another reason to celebrate in the gym: power forward Olivinha reached - and surpassed - the unprecedented mark of two thousand rebounds in the New Basketball Brazil (NBB), establishing himself as the competition's main athlete in this field. The player was one of the highlights of the match, recording a double-double, with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The top scorer on the court was Marquinhos, with 22 points.
"I'm very happy to have achieved this milestone, to be the first in the history of the NBB. It's a job that's been done very well, thank God. I can only thank my teammates and the coaching staff, who give me the confidence to achieve all this," said Olivinha, who was applauded by the fans.
The game
The first quarter was a close one, with both teams separated by just one or two points, but Uberlândia maintained its lead. Then, with just over three minutes remaining, power forward Olivinha turned the score in Flamengo's favor with a three-pointer (17-16). With two baskets from Vitor Benite, the Pride of the Nation reached its largest point difference in the match so far (21-16). The opponent scored two more points with seconds remaining in the first quarter, making the score 21-18. Nico opened the second quarter with a three-pointer. It was also in this quarter that Olivinha, who had been the team's leading scorer with nine points, surpassed seven rebounds in the game, reaching two thousand in NBB history, an unprecedented feat in the competition. The Rubro-Negro continued to excel on the court and, imposing its rhythm, led by 12 points before halftime (43-31).
Alongside Olivinha, the night's record-breaker, shooting guard Marquinhos also performed well at Tijuca Tênis Clube, passing the power forward and establishing himself as the game's top scorer. Argentine Herrmann came in second in scoring with 11, including nine three-pointers. Swift offensively and diligent defensively, the Pride of the Nation held a 20-point lead by the end of the quarter (69-46), much to the delight of the fans in the gym. In the final quarter, the lead only increased, reaching 30 points (76-46) with a three-pointer from Benite. In addition to the record, Olivinha also achieved a double-double in the match. With this large lead, coach José Neto took advantage of the opportunity to give the younger players some rhythm, bringing on Danielzinho, Chupeta, Mingau, and Gigante. The fans' celebration marked the final moments of the game, which ended with another red-black victory: 91 to 58, after an excellent defensive performance by the team, which once again allowed the opponent to score less than 60 points in the 40 minutes.
