Accustomed to fighting for victories on the court and being idolized by Flamengo fans during New Basketball Brazil matches, players Marcelinho, Dedé, and Fred switched roles and enjoyed a night of fan service this Wednesday, in the special seats at Maracanã. Accompanied by supervisor André Guimarães and physiotherapist Ricardo Machado, the Flamengo stars donned the Sacred Mantle and cheered on their favorite team in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 against Corinthians.
Even though they were there to cheer on Adriano, Vagner Love & Co., Marcelinho, Dedé, and Fred couldn't escape requests for autographs, photos, and interviews. Always attentive to fans and the press, the trio, who will play against Franca next Tuesday in the interior of São Paulo for a spot in the NBB final, jumped, screamed, and struggled until they let out the goal-scoring cry from Adriano's penalty kick.
"'Didico' is the man. He may not have played that well, but he always makes the decision when he needs to," said Dedé at the end of the match.
The leading scorer for the two-time Brazilian basketball champion, Marcelinho, wasn't thrilled with the first half. However, the winger was so appreciative of Flamengo's performance in the final 45 minutes that for a few minutes he even thought Flamengo seemed to be playing with an extra player.
"Even with Michael's sending off, Flamengo was much better and dominated the entire second half. Corinthians took too long to take risks even with an extra man, but when they did, they ended up exposing themselves and almost conceded the second goal," analyzed Marcelinho, who made a point of coming to the defense of the protagonists of the spectacle.
"People always have this habit of creating duels in these most important matches. But in team sports, no one wins or loses a match or a title alone. It wasn't Adriano who got the better of Ronaldo, it was Flamengo who beat Corinthians," Marcelinho emphasized.
