It's not every day that you get to watch an idol make history. That's why the children from the Cultura na Cesta project, led by Professor Wanderson, in Santa Cruz, left the HSBC Arena last Sunday in awe. Invited to watch the match between Flamengo and São José in the Novo Basquete Brasil competition, the young talents saw Marcelinho Machado break the record for points in a single game in the competition's history, as well as the best three-point shooting record.

Since last season, the project has had a close relationship with Flamengo. Some athletes have already visited the youth training grounds, and three youngsters even passed the Mengão selection process earlier this year. Wanderson, a mentor and teacher for the social project Cultura na Cesta, which has been teaching street basketball to minors in the Cesarão suburb of Rio de Janeiro since 2005, took his students to the HSBC Arena to watch the game on Sunday.

"They were amazed. It started halfway through the second quarter. I was talking to some of the boys and they were commenting, asking if he was making any mistakes. Then I told them he was inspired, and it was good that I told them he was making history," said Wanderson.

At the end, Marcelinho and part of the cast did a photo and autograph session for the children.

"I'm very grateful to Marcelinho for his humility, because he paid us a lot of attention, stopped, talked, took pictures, and I explained to them that this is essential. I also told them that he always respected his parents a lot, trained a lot, and it was a good lesson for them, who see the player as a role model. We arrived in Santa Cruz, and the crowd started kicking the ball around, everyone was motivated," he explained.
