With a new coach, Flamengo faces its first challenge of 2011
Gonzalo García's debut will be against Joinville. Marcelinho could reach 5 points for Flamengo.

With a new manager and records in sight, Flamengo plays its first game of 2011 this Friday (November 07.11th) in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil). Second in the overall standings (five wins in six games), the red-and-black team faces Joinville, third in the standings (six wins in eight games), at 20 p.m. at the Tijuca Tennis Club. Tickets cost R$10. Fans wearing a Flamengo shirt pay just R$5.
The match will mark the beginning of a new era for the Gávea team. After six years coached by Paulo Chupeta, the team will debut under Argentine Gonzalo García. The 43-year-old coach has been assistant coach to Sérgio Hernandez on the Argentine national team since 2006 and helped the team win Olympic bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games and finish fifth at the 2010 World Cup in Turkey. The coach is excited for the challenge.
"The expectations for the debut are huge. Flamengo is a great team, one of the best in the Americas and with one of the biggest fan bases in the world. This only motivates me to work hard," said Gonzalo.
On Sunday, the team heads to Ibarra, Ecuador, where they will compete in the first phase of the Liga de las Américas. The team is in Group C, which also includes Mavort (EQU), Quimsa (ARG), and Español (CHI). Their debut will be on the 11th, against the Argentine team.
HISTORICAL BRANDS - Friday's game will also have a special meaning for two key players on the team. Star Marcelinho is eight points away from reaching the incredible milestone of five thousand points in official matches for the red and black team. So far, he has played 198 official matches wearing the number 4 in just over three years at Gávea (he arrived in October 2007).
"I'm proud to see these numbers continue to emerge, as this is part of my contribution to the team. These milestones reinforce my connection with Flamengo. It's increasingly rare for players to identify with a team, and I'm happy to be part of the club's history," said Marcelinho.
Power forward Jefferson will complete one hundred games wearing the sacred mantle.
"For a professional player, it's a very emotional moment to achieve something so significant in their career. It's a privilege to be part of the history of such a successful team that brings so much joy to its fans," he said.
THREE POINTS TOURNAMENT - During halftime, there will also be a qualifying round for the NBB 3-Point Tournament. This year, there will be six participants: Thiaguinho from Pinheiros (defending champion), an athlete from the host city, and four others who will emerge from the qualifying rounds (January 7th and 9th). Flamengo will be represented by Jefferson, who will shoot 25 consecutive balls in 45 seconds (countdown clock) at the location of his choice.
