Universo/Brasília showed this Sunday morning at HSBC Arena why they lead the qualifying round of the Novo Basquete Brasil season. With an excellent defensive performance in the third quarter, the team from the Federal District imposed their game in the third quarter and defeated Flamengo 81-73. After returning from the locker room, Brasília tightened its defense even more and made long-range shots difficult. Early on, after a technical foul on Marcelinho Machado, Brasília had four consecutive free throws (making three) and had possession. Led by Alex, Valtinho, and Guilherme, Brasília closed the gap and broke through for the first time. Unsettled, Flamengo had a disastrous third quarter, rushing too many shots and failing to score – Marcelinho finished the game with 21 points.
Brasília led 67-54 at the end of the third quarter and only needed to maintain their momentum to secure a secure lead. Even though they were better in the final quarter, with a more vibrant attitude, the reigning NBB champion couldn't close the gap – the closest they managed was an eight-point margin. "The defense was responsible for the result," said one of Brasília's standouts, Guilherme (21 points), at the end of the match. "Their attack was very good, but we managed to open up in the second half," he added.
For Flamengo's point guard Duda, the absence of players like Coloneze and Helio has an impact. "We had a good first half. After halftime, they came back with a better attitude. We couldn't keep up the pace on defense," said Duda, who scored 13 points.
