Depleted of four players, Flamengo was unable to overcome the strong marking imposed by the Franca team and suffered its third defeat in 12 games in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil). Playing at the opponent's home ground, the Rubro-negra team was defeated 101 x 91, on Thursday night (27.01), at Ginásio Pedrocão, in Franca. Marcelinho was the top scorer of the match, with 38 points. Bábby, the standout in the first half, scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds (double-double).
The Rio de Janeiro team was without injured Jefferson and Wagner, as well as American David Teague and rookie Fred Duarte, known as Varejinho, who were not registered for the match, as it was a game postponed from the first round in November of last year due to the South American League finals. With the result, Flamengo let the competition's lead slip away. Despite having the same number of losses as Brasília, the new leader, Flamengo has a lower record, having played one fewer game: 75% for the Rubro-Negro, compared to Brasília's 76,9%.
With defensive issues and unable to break through Franca's tight marking, Flamengo struggled in the first half, despite Bábby's excellent performance. In the first quarter alone, the Flamengo center scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Franca maintained a healthy lead throughout. The first quarter ended 27-19. In the second, Flamengo, after trailing by 13 points (39-26), threatened a comeback and went into halftime trailing 45-39.
A three-pointer from Marcelinho early in the second half brought Flamengo closer to 45-42. The red-and-black forward, incidentally, shone in the third quarter, scoring 16 points. Even so, Franca's team remained ahead 73-63. The deficit narrowed to four points in the final quarter, but Flamengo lost forward/center Teichmann, who was fouled out with five fouls. In the end, Franca won by 10 points 101-91.
"The Franca team played a good game, scored very well and made the most of their home court advantage, setting a strong pace," said forward Teichmann, who also had a double-double: 14 points and 11 rebounds.
