Flamengo debuts this Wednesday (17.11) in the New Basketball Brazil (NBB). Champion in the 2008/2009 season and runner-up in 2009/2010, the Rubro-negro begins the journey towards the second title of the League, created in 2008, against Cetaf/Vila Velha. The match will be played at 20 pm, at the Tartarugão gym, in Vila Velha (ES).
For the first game, the red-and-black team will be without four players. Point guard Hélio, shooting guard Duda, and power forwards Jefferson and Wagner are serving suspensions for the altercation in the third game of the last edition of the tournament's final, against Brasília, in Brasília.
On the other hand, the team will have the return of center Bábby, champion in the first edition with Flamengo and who spent last season with Paulistano, and point guard Guto, a homegrown talent who was with Fluminense. In addition, it has star Marcelinho, the all-time leading scorer in an NBB match (45 points, against Assis, in 2010).
The team will also feature the debuts of center Átila, who has played abroad (in the USA, Bulgaria, and Spain) since 2003, and winger Fred Duarte, just 19 years old, the club's most recent signing. The young player, who started at Clube Central de Niterói and played for two seasons in Spain (Torrejon), is one of Flamengo's prospects for the season.
"I'm very happy with the opportunity and hope to live up to expectations," said the 1,95'XNUMX" player, who has a similar look to Anderson Varejão, one of the most successful Brazilians in the NBA. "I love being compared to him. Varejão is one of my inspirations," he added.
In addition to the NBB, Flamengo competes in two other competitions simultaneously. The team has qualified for the final hexagonal of the South American League, which will be played at the HSBC Arena in Rio from November 24th to 28th, and for the semifinals of the State Championship, the date of which has not yet been set.
"Right now, competing in several competitions at the same time, we have to work more on the psychological side. But Flamengo has a strong team, which is improving with each match, and we have everything we need to achieve our goals, which are victories," said coach Paulo Chupeta.
Flamengo and Vila Velha have already faced each other twice this year. Both matches were in early October, in friendly matches preparing for the NBB. Flamengo won both matches, 90-70 and 99-80.
