On the night of the reopening of the court at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium in Gávea, Flamengo's victory came by a whisker. In the 12th round of the NBB (New Basketball Brazil), the team was defeated by Uberlândia 90-88 this Friday (March 25.03). With the result, the Rubro-Negro now occupies second place in the overall standings, tied with Pinheiros, with 18 wins in 25 matches (72% success rate). Brasília, Flamengo's next opponent and with a game in hand, is the leader: 19 wins in 26 matches (73,08%). The two teams face each other on Sunday (March 27.03), at 13 pm, at Tijuca Tênis Clube.
The setting for the party was perfect: the court, which hadn't been used since 2009, had a modern floating floor, along with new backboards and a scoreboard. On the walls were pictures of the players with their respective autographs. And the fans turned out in force.
Before the start of the match, president Patrícia Amorim cut a ribbon, symbolizing the reopening of the court.
"It is with great pride and emotion that we realize this dream of reopening the Hélio Maurício gymnasium and being able to bring basketball games here," said the president, emotionally.
And Flamengo came very close to sending the match into overtime. With two seconds remaining, Flamengo had possession, with a throw-in. Hélio passed to Jefferson, who turned quickly and shot. The ball hit the rim and nearly went in. The fans recognized the team's effort and applauded at the end.
"In the first quarter, American Robby Collum ended up making the difference. We managed to get back into the game and level the playing field, but we ended up losing in the details," said Jefferson.
Despite Marcelinho having the first Friday at the renovated house, the team lost the first quarter (28 to 23) and went into half-time with a five-point disadvantage (40 to 35).
The red-and-black team only managed to take the lead with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter: 41-40. It was the beginning of the comeback led by American Teague and center Átila, who came in for the injured Babby (acromial-clavicular joint subluxation). The team closed the third quarter leading 64-62.
Uberlândia improved in the final quarter and took the lead again with six minutes remaining (70 to 69). Despite the balance, the precision of American Robby Collum prevailed, leading scorer of the game with 34 points.
"They really deserved the victory. But now it's time to think about the next game, against Brasília," said Marcelinho.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (24), Hélio (2), Duda (8), Teichmann (4) and Bábby (10). Entered: Fred (-), Átila (9), Teague (28), Wagner (-), Guto (-) and Jefferson (3).
