Flamengo's under-17 basketball team debuted with two victories in the Minas-Brasília Cup, in Brasília (DF). This Monday morning (16.07), the team beat Minas, 53 x 39. In the afternoon, the team led by coach Leonardo Bruno beat Fluminense, 64 x 42. The red-black Leonardo Medeiros was the top scorer in both matches, with 15 and 18 points, respectively. Flamengo returns to the court this Tuesday (17.07), against Lance Livre (from Brasília), at 10:15 am.
"There were two difficult matches. The first, against Minas, for example, was only decided in the last period. But Flamengo is very focused on the competition," said coach Leo Bruno.
The bad news was the injury to point guard Gabriel Guedes, who twisted his right ankle.
"It was a mild sprain, treatment began immediately after the match and I believe he will be back in the team by the third round," said physiotherapist Vitor Pessanha.
After facing Lance Livre, Flamengo concludes its participation in the first round against Sport Recife, Wednesday (July 18.07), at 10:15 am. The second round begins on the same day, when the Rubro-negro takes on Minas, at 16:15 pm. On July 19.07, the team from Gávea has two more challenges: at 9 am, against Fluminense, and at 15 pm, against Lance Livre. On July 20.07, Flamengo faces Sport Recife, at 15 pm.
"The under-17 team is undefeated in the Campeonato Carioca, and this competition in Brasília is very important for the players to gain experience. We thank the vice president of Olympic Sports, Cristina Callou, who, together with president Patricia Amorim, spared no effort to send the team to the tournament," said the director of youth basketball, Flavio Santos, known as Bacalhau.
