On the afternoon of last Sunday (18) two athletes from the FlaBasquete squad were "loaned" to the Peruvian team Elite Sports during their last match at the I International Tournament of Arequipa, in southern Peru. The competition, which is part of the Mais Querido's pre-season of friendly matches, ended yesterday with Flamengo in second place overall.
Before the red-and-black team took the court, Felipín and Jorge Iglesias donned the Elite jersey as a sign of mutual collaboration between the teams. In the previous days, Spaniards and Argentinians had repeated the feat as a way of encouraging the local team and exchanging knowledge with foreign athletes.
"This is a really cool experience. It's very positive for everyone. It was very important for Felipin and Jorge to be on the Peruvian team, playing, getting into the swing of things, and getting plenty of court time. I think this exchange with international teams is very good for Flamengo's athletes and also for the local team. It's very important to continue our philosophy of developing athletes from the grassroots level," commented Flamengo's Executive Director of Olympic Sports, Marcelo Vido, who traveled with the delegation for the friendlies.
Felipin joined Flamengo in 2014 and is currently a member of FlaBasquete's under-19 team. Jorge, despite joining the club's under-22 team in 2015, a year after Felipin, has been a member of the Orgulho da Nação adult squad since last season, when Flamengo won its fifth NBB championship. Both will be part of coach José Neto's team in 2016/17.
The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo adult basketball team relies on direct funding from its sponsor Estácio, in addition to investments from Tim via the State Sports Incentive Law/State Secretariat for Sports, Leisure and Youth (ICMS).
