Flamengo achieved its goal and qualified for the final hexagonal of the South American Basketball League at the end of the month. Despite losing to Atenas de Córdoba (ARG), 83-74, on Saturday night (November 05.11th) at the Carlos Cerutti Gymnasium in Córdoba, the Rubro-Negra team secured second place in Group C. Flamengo had already beaten UTE (EQU) and Boston College (CHI), but fell behind the Argentines (also with two wins) in the head-to-head, the first tiebreaker. Marcelinho led all scorers with 25 points. Kammerichs scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Flamengo entered the court with qualification already assured and dominated the first three quarters. In the final five minutes, the team suffered a power outage and ultimately let the victory slip away.
In the first quarter, Flamengo managed to open a seven-point lead (14 x 7) and closed the partial at 22 x 18. In the following quarter, with a three-pointer from Marcelinho, Rubro-negro opened an eight-point lead (31 x 23). Atenas got closer to 30 x 31, but did not manage to take the lead and Flamengo went into the break winning by 39 x 36, with 15 points from Marcelinho and 12 from Leandrinho.
Atenas tied the game for the first time with two minutes remaining in the third quarter (2 x 56). But with a three-pointer from Jackson, Flamengo opened the game again (56 x 61), before closing it out at 56 x 65. In the final quarter, the Argentine team took advantage of a moment of inattention from the Rio de Janeiro team to take the lead at 60 x 68 and secure the victory at 67 x 83.
"Athens pressed hard and, in the final quarter, took advantage of Flamengo's lack of focus to win. But the important thing is that we achieved our objective and qualified," said forward/center Kammerichs.
Flamengo started with: Leandrinho (14), Marcelinho (25), David Jackson (6), Kammerichs (14) and Caio Torres (9). Entered: Hélio (-), Teichmann (4), Átila (2), Fred (-).
