The giant has finally awakened. The current two-time national champion, Flamengo, needed to beat Brasília on Thursday afternoon (June 03.06) at the HSBC Arena to force a fifth game in the Novo Basquete Brasil 2009-2010 final and stay in contention for a third title. And they not only won, but also convinced. In a great collective performance, the Rubro-Negro defeated their rivals from the federal capital 94-74. With blocks, dunks, alley-oops, and plenty of perfect three-pointers, Paulo Chupeta's team proved why they are the champions of the last two editions of the competition and maintained their chances of a historic third title.
The result leaves the series tied at 2-2 and the Brazilian champion will be decided next Sunday at 10am in Anápolis (GO). Before that, on Friday (04.06), six players (Hélio, Jefferson, Dedé, Wagner, Duda and Vitor) from Rubro-Negro will be tried by the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) for the confusion after game three in Brasília.
In the chest and in the race
Flamengo took the court determined to force a fifth game in Brasília. And nothing seemed to be able to stop the red-and-blacks in the first frame. With a strong will, Paulo Chupeta's team pressed hard, came out with speed, and with Duda and Teichmann in high spirits, they quickly opened up a 12-4 lead. Fighting for every possession and looking to increase the lead even further, the team relied on Duda's three-pointers and aggressive defense to put a 13-point lead on the scoreboard, sending the HSBC Arena crowd into a frenzy. But after a technical foul on Marcelinho, the Brasília team came back into the game and cut the lead to just six points: 25-19, with 10 points from Teichmann and 11 from Duda.
The second quarter started tensely, with the visiting team closing the deficit to three points after two three-pointers by Guilherme Giovannoni. However, the Red-Black team, unfazed by the blow, regained control of the match after a technical foul by Valtinho, which left Flamengo with an eight-point lead. Without Marcelinho, who had three fouls, Duda and Teichmann continued to play the lead, along with Hélio, who entered the game and began organizing the attack. Lula Ferreira's Brasília also reorganized, switching from man-to-man defense to zone defense, but even so, Flamengo closed the first half comfortably: 40-32.
Fla runs over and the decision goes to the fifth game
After conceding a three-pointer in the first attack of the third quarter, Flamengo responded with the same weapon. With long-range shots, Fred and Jefferson (twice each) allowed the team from Gávea to extend their lead to 13 points (56-43). The number 18, in fact, took the lead as the game's leading scorer with 14. And the same Jefferson, after two, spectacularly blocked Nezinho and set up the counterattack for Hélio to open up the biggest lead of the game in favor of the Rubro-Negro so far: 15 points (58-43). In the last second, a three-pointer by Valtinho sent the game into the final ten minutes with the score at 66-56 for Flamengo.
Even with a healthy lead, Paulo Chupeta's team didn't slow down at the start of the fourth quarter. Quite the opposite. They accelerated even further, taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and gaining a 19-point lead with a spectacular shot from Duda's three-point line, making it 78-59. All this without Marcelinho, who, with three fouls, began to be rested in the second quarter and then never returned to the court. And as if the great victory weren't enough, Brasília player Alex was also ejected for his fifth foul six minutes before the final whistle, sending the more than 10 Flamengo fans into ecstasy in the Arena. The team from Gávea simply had to hold onto their lead, and with Marcelinho already on the court, they won the match 94-74 and forced a fifth game of the NBB final.
Who scored:
