With first place in the qualifying round already secured, with one match remaining, Flamengo's basketball team hosted Tijuca on Monday night (April 08.04th) to fulfill their schedule, in a game held at their opponent's gymnasium. The duel was very even and went to two overtimes, with a happy ending for the Rubro-Negro. Encouraged by their fans, Flamengo managed to regroup in the final minutes of the clock and defeated their opponent 107-103. The duel was part of the 29th round of the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB), with yet another record-breaking match on the court.
"We relaxed a bit in the second and third quarters, but Flamengo is a team that always goes out on the court trying to win. We had two tough overtimes, but we managed to get it together on the court and come out with the victory," said coach José Neto.
Center Caio Torres had a great game, scoring 26 points and leading scorer, while power forward Olivinha recorded a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. If he had reached the 4-rebound mark in this game, Olivinha would have broken the record for the game, with 1500 total. He now has 1511 rebounds and will go down in NBB history as the all-time leading rebounder of all seasons.
"I'm very happy with this achievement, achieved in a very tough match, but it's all the result of daily work on and off the court. Although the match didn't change the standings at all, we showed that every time we step on the court, we play our best to try to come away with the victory," said Olivinha.
"This was a very tiring game, and when we saw that it was going to a second overtime, everyone was really tired physically and mentally. In this match, some players took responsibility and made the difference in the final score, like Caio, Benite, and Olivinha," said Marquinhos, who scored 20 points.
Next Wednesday (April 10th), Mais Querido will return to the Tijuca Tênis Clube court to face Suzano. The match will be in the 04th round, as the duel was postponed due to the League of the Americas.
