Red-black basketball team suffers defeat to Halcones Rojos, from Mexico, and now faces Peñarol

Flamengo suffered a defeat in its debut in the second phase of the Liga de las Américas in Veracruz, Mexico. After a strong first quarter, the red-and-black team couldn't keep up the pace and was defeated by Halcones Rojos, the tournament's host team, 81-77 in the early hours of Friday (February 04.02) (Thursday night, February 3, in Mexico). Forward/point guard Marcelinho led the way with 27 points.
Also this Friday (04.02), Flamengo will face Peñarol (ARG), the current League champion, at 22 pm (Brasília time). It will be the meeting of Argentine coaches Gonzalo Garcia, from Rubro-negro, and Sergio Hernandez, from the opposing team. Gonzalo was Hernandez's assistant coach in the Argentine national team for six years.
Rubro-negro ends its participation in the second phase on Saturday (05.02), against Capitanes Arecibo (PUR), who defeated Peñarol in the first match by 85 x 80. Two teams from each group (E and F) qualify for the final quadrangular, in March.
Flamengo started the match with a strong defense and held the lead throughout the first quarter, which ended 19-16. Halfway through the second quarter, the home team tied the score at 25-25 and went into halftime leading 34-30.
In the second half, with a strong defense, it was Halcones' turn to lead the scoreboard. The Mexican team led by 12 points (51-39) in the third quarter, which ended 56-45 to the home team. In the final quarter, Flamengo was unable to close the gap and was defeated 81-77.
"We knew the quality of the Mexican team and its good players. Flamengo played an inconsistent game. We had a good first quarter, but from the second onwards, we started making a lot of mistakes and when we got back into the game, the deficit was already too great and we didn't have time to turn it around," analyzed coach Gonzalo Garcia.
For the next match, Gonzalo knows that Flamengo will have more difficulties.
"Peñarol is a great team, with a very South American style of play, unlike Halcones, who play with a Caribbean style. We're going to change our tactics," he concluded.
