Flamengo confirmed its favoritism and secured another victory in NBB 4. On Saturday afternoon (03.03), the team defeated Vila Velha 72-60 at Ginásio Tartarugão in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo. Flamengo now has 16 wins in 21 matches (76,1% success rate) and could move up one position in the table and take second place if São José loses to Franca this Saturday. Pinheiros remains in the lead. With two games in hand, Flamengo was in third place before the start of the round.
Marcelinho was the top scorer of the match, with 34 points (seven three-pointers). Caio Torres also stood out, with 15 points and 11 rebounds (double-double). Now, Flamengo returns to the court next Tuesday (06.03), against Minas, at the Hélio Maurício Gymnasium, in Gávea.
"Vila Velha had a stronger stance than us in the first half. At halftime, Gonzalo Garcia (the Flamengo coach) said we had to play with our hearts, and we did just that: we sought out our hearts. That's what Flamengo is all about: heart," said captain Marcelinho.
Flamengo started better, closing the first quarter 21-14. However, in the second half, the team again showed defensive lapses, and Vila Velha went into halftime leading 28-35. In the second half, Flamengo recovered and, with a pass from David Jackson, took the lead: 43-41. The third quarter ended 56-52 for the Rio de Janeiro team. In the final quarter, the Rubro-Negro's greater experience spoke louder, and Flamengo closed the game 72-60.
Flamengo started with: Hélio (2), David Jackson (12), Marcelinho (34), Kammerichs (9) and Caio Torres (15). Entered: Fred (-), Wagner (-) and Chris Hayes (-).
