Referee makes a mistake in a decisive play and Flamengo loses to Sionistas by 91 to 89

The rain gave Brasilia a break, and the remainder of the Interleague Tournament game between Flamengo and Juventud Sionista took place this Wednesday at the Asceb Gymnasium. Interrupted with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the game resumed with the score at 66-62 in favor of Flamengo and Brazilian forward Marcelinho at the free throw line. But despite Flamengo's captain hitting the bonus shot and increasing the lead to five points, the Argentine team prevailed in the final ten minutes, eventually winning 91-89 with an offside basket by American center Robinson just as the clock had run down. Referee Cristiano Maranho, even though the play was close, called the shot.
Despite the refereeing error, Flamengo didn't perform as well as they did in the first three quarters on Tuesday. With the loss, the Gávea team now faces the loser of Libertad Sunchalles and Universo/Brasília this Thursday. The winner of the Brazilian bracket faces the champion of the Argentine bracket on the 14th in Mar del Plata.
While the Brazilians performed well on Tuesday and Flamengo led the entire scoreboard, this Wednesday it was Argentina's turn to fall. Having been subpar in the first three periods of the match with below-average performance and no points, American Buchanan looked like a different player on Wednesday. With his accurate hand, the winger was the main driver of Argentina's comeback, hitting two three-pointers right after the restart and scoring 12 points.
Even without its key players on an inspired afternoon, Flamengo had the game in hand when it was leading 87-82 with less than three minutes remaining. Irritated by the refereeing, which made numerous mistakes and reversed fouls on both sides, the red-and-black team began making silly mistakes late on, allowing Argentina to win.
"We lost a match that seemed to be going smoothly. We got too irritated with the refereeing, lost focus at times, and ended up making some poor choices in our attack. Unfortunately, we didn't have the composure to win the match," lamented coach Paulo Chupeta.
