After taking the lead in the best-of-five NBB semifinals, Flamengo suffered a comeback on Sunday night (May 20.05) in São José dos Campos, São Paulo. The team was defeated by São José, 100-91. With the result, the São Paulo team opened up a 2-1 lead in the series. Now, at home, Flamengo will have the chance to tie the series and remain in the fight for a spot in the competition's final. The two teams face each other next Friday (May 25.05), at a time yet to be determined, at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium. If necessary, a fifth game will take place on May 27.05, in São José dos Campos.
In the first game of the series, in Rio, Flamengo gave their opponent no chance and won 84-68. In the second game, in São José dos Campos, the Rubro-negro team conceded an 88-88 draw in regular time and ended up losing 107-99 in extra time.
Marcelinho led all scorers with 27 points. A standout in recent games, center Caio Torres played with sacrifice. He sprained his left foot in last Friday's match (May 18.05) and was on the court for 17 minutes.
São José took the lead in the first quarter (26 x 23) and went into halftime leading 55 x 42, despite 19 points from Marcelinho, the first half's top scorer. In the third quarter, Flamengo struggled defensively and was outscored 82 x 65. Despite winning the final quarter (26 x 18), the Rio de Janeiro team was unable to erase their opponent's advantage, which closed at 100 x 91.
"São José managed to open up a good lead in the first half, and we didn't play well in the second half, especially defensively," said coach Gonzalo Garcia, who believes Flamengo can tie the series at home. "We had the chance to win the second game and we didn't manage it. Now we need to cool down and go for the win at home, which we already achieved in the first game," he added.
