After more than an hour of delay due to the storm that hit Buenos Aires and flooded the Obas Sanitárias court, Flamengo debuted with a defeat in the final hexagonal of the South American League. On Wednesday night (01.02), the red-and-black team was defeated by Pinheiros 59 x 74, in Argentina. Marcelinho was the game's top scorer, with 16 points. Caio scored 14 and David Jackson 10.
This Thursday (02.02), Flamengo will not play and, on Friday (03.02), the team faces Atenas de Córdoba (ARG), at 20:30 pm (Brasília time), needing a victory to continue dreaming about the title. The two best teams in the group will qualify for the semifinals, on Saturday (04.02). The decision will be Sunday (05.02). In the other group are Brasília, Malvin (URU) and Obras Sanitárias (ARG). Flamengo, champion in 2009, is looking for its second title.
After a long wait for the game to start, both teams started off tight, and the first quarter ended tied at 12-12. The game remained even in the second quarter. Kammerichs grabbed 12 rebounds and Marcelinho led the first quarter with 11 points, but Pinheiros went into halftime leading 28-24.
In the third quarter, Pinheiros took a 42-29 lead, and despite improving throughout the match, Flamengo was unable to turn the score around: 39-51 to the São Paulo team. The comeback became more difficult in the final quarter, and Flamengo ended up losing 59-74.
"It was our worst match of the season. We made a lot of mistakes and didn't threaten Pinheiros at any point," summarized coach Gonzalo Garcia.
"The team made a lot of defensive and offensive mistakes. Now it's time to forget what happened and focus on the match against Athens. If there's a chance we can qualify, we'll fight for it," added forward/center Kammerichs.
