Flamengo came from behind in the opening round of the NBB (New Basketball Brazil) quarterfinals. Playing away from home, the team was defeated by Bauru 87-85 on Sunday morning (April 24.04) in Bauru, in the first game of the best-of-five tournament. The red-and-black team now has two home games to recover and stay in the fight for a spot in the semifinals of the competition.
On Tuesday (April 26.04), the two teams face off again at 20 p.m. at the HSBC Arena. The following day, another challenge, also at the HSBC Arena, at 20 p.m. Having finished fourth in the first phase – with the same record as the top three – Flamengo has the home court advantage in the matches against the fifth-placed São Paulo team. The fourth game takes place in Bauru on April 29.04, and the fifth in Rio on May 01.05. In Sunday's game, Marcelinho was the top scorer with 30 points.
Flamengo took the lead and with a strong defense, the team managed to open up a 20-14 lead, closing the first quarter at 22-19. Bauru tightened the pressure in the second quarter and went into halftime winning 38-29. Bábby left the court with back pain and never returned.
In the second half, Bauru continued to play better and closed the third quarter at 67 x 52. In the last part, Flamengo started to take advantage and, with 23 seconds left, they got closer: 84 x 83. Marcelinho was eliminated with five fouls and the Rubro-negro ended up wasting the last shot: Bauru 87 x 85.
"I think we were a bit lacking offensively and didn't find our shots. But that's how the playoffs are, and all the games will be evenly matched. Now we'll play at home and hope to win both games," said coach Gonzalo Garcia.
"We have to be prepared for tough games in the playoffs, and we knew it would be like that here in Bauru. Now we have to prepare to turn things around in Rio," Duda added.
Flamengo played with: Hélio (5), Marcelinho (30), Teague (9), Teichmann (4) and Bábby (4). Entered: Fred (-), Jefferson (5), Duda (14), Átila (2), Wagner (-) and Guto (12).
