In the final stretch of preparations for the second phase of the Liga das Américas, Flamengo is making final adjustments for the competition. On Monday (January 31.01), the team trained in two periods at the HSBC Arena, and on Tuesday (February 01.02), they travel to Veracruz, Mexico. Flamengo debuts in the early hours of February 04.02, at 0:15 am (Brasília time), against Halcones Rojos, the home team. This is the first time that the Rubro-negro has advanced beyond the first phase of the tournament, considered the most important on the continent.
The team will be without forward/center Jefferson for the match. The player experienced pain in his right thigh again and, late last week, underwent another MRI, which revealed a grade 1 injury to his hamstring. Jefferson will be sidelined until February 13.02th, undergoing physical therapy. Only then will he undergo another comparative MRI to ensure the injury has healed and then return to training with the ball.
Meanwhile, power forward/center Wagner will return to the team after three weeks of treatment for a left knee ligament injury. He was injured during the team's first practice session in the first phase of the South American League on January 11.01th in Ibarra, Ecuador.
After Halcones Rojos, Flamengo faces Peñarol (ARG), on 04.02, and Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR), on 05.02. Two teams from each group (E and F) qualify for the final quadrangular, in March.
"Our goal will be to qualify for the finals, as Flamengo has never advanced beyond the first phase of the Liga das Américas. There will be three major challenges. We will face the home team, Peñarol, the current champion, and Arecibo, who have strengthened significantly for the competition," analyzed Flamengo's coach, Argentine Gonzalo Garcia.
The coach regretted Jefferson's absence on the trip.
"He's a very important player and the team will certainly miss him. But we have great players to fill that void," he added.
