Flamengo ended 2012 with a memorable away victory over Bauru, securing an unbeaten lead in the NBB. After trailing by 17 points, the team demonstrated its ability to comeback, taking the match to two overtime periods and winning 102-97 (86-86 in regulation and 92-92 in the first overtime) on Saturday night (October 22.10) at the Panela de Pressão Gymnasium in Bauru. Flamengo now has seven wins in seven games and is one win away from equaling Brasília's best start to a season in the championship's history, in the 2009/2010 season.
The red-and-black team will have a day off until the 27th, when they return to training in Gávea. Their next match will be on January 5th, against Tijuca, in Rio.
Despite leading 19-18 in the first quarter, Flamengo, unable to find their defensive system, went into halftime trailing 43-50. In the third quarter, Bauru continued to play better, winning 59-71. Flamengo closed the gap with a 3-pointer from Duda, but with 36 seconds remaining, Bauru led by six points. With a spectacular comeback, Flamengo took the game to overtime: 86-86. In the first overtime, both teams had chances to win, but again the score was tied at 92-92. In the second overtime, Flamengo dominated throughout, winning 102-97.
"It was a spectacular game. Bauru played very well and I think it will be difficult for any team to repeat that performance during the championship. We had a lot of difficulties in defense in the first half, but we managed to get that fundamentals right and stop Bauru's attack. I think that was the key to the victory," analyzed coach José Neto.
Flamengo started with: Kojo (19), Benite (20), Marquinhos (22), Olivinha (9) and Caio Torres (6). Entered: Duda (16), Shilton (2), Gegê (8), Feliz (-) and Diego (-).
