Seeking its second South American Club League title, Flamengo makes its debut in the competition this Thursday (October 28.10) in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. The first challenge will be against Malvin, from Uruguay, starting at 20:30 pm (Brasília time). Flamengo is in Group B, which also includes Inacap (CHI) and Quimsa (ARG). Two teams from each group will qualify for the final hexagonal in December.
Group A is made up of Franca (BRA), Boca Juniors (ARG), Mavort (EQU) and Bigua (URU), and Group C has Cúcuta (COL), Libertad Sunshales (ARG), Espartanos de Margarita (EQU) and Brasília (BRA).
After being champion of the League in 2009, Rubro-negro was eliminated in the first phase of the competition in the 2009/2010 season.
Malvin and Quimsa are familiar to Flamengo. Their opening opponent was defeated by the Rio de Janeiro team in the first round of the last edition of the tournament, 95-73. The Argentines lost to Flamengo in the memorable 2009 final, 98-96. In the following edition of the League, Quimsa defeated Flamengo in the first round, 98-63.
"It will be a tough competition and we will need the entire squad. We are prepared to have a great championship," said power forward Jefferson.
Back at Flamengo, after a season at Paulistano, pivot Bábby remembers the importance of the debut match.
"It always gives me butterflies in my stomach. But we're prepared. The match against Malvin will be of great importance for our qualification. They're an experienced and competitive team," said Bábby.
Flamengo's reinforcement for the 2010/2011 season, center Átila has one more reason to be excited:
"It will be the first international tournament I'll be playing in for Flamengo, and it will be a great experience. We have a strong squad and are focused on qualifying for the next round," said Átila.
