Flamengo narrowly missed out on its twelfth consecutive victory. After practically having the game in hand, the red-and-black team allowed Bauru to come back and ended up losing to the home team in overtime, 108-105 (95-95), in the eleventh round of the second round of the Novo Basquete Brasil season. With the loss, the Rio de Janeiro team now has the same 41 points as Brasília, but loses the lead in head-to-head matches. Forward Marcelinho led all scorers with 25 points. This Sunday, Flamengo returns to the court against Assis at 11 a.m. at the Jairo Ferreira dos Santos Gymnasium, also known as Jairão.
After a blistering start and winning the first quarter 23-14, Flamengo's performance dropped and they went into the locker room losing 44-43. After the break, Bauru continued to play better and opened up a 12-point lead at the start of the third quarter after a six-point attack, after the referee called an intentional foul and a technical in favor of the home team on the same play.
The red-and-black team improved and closed the deficit to just five points by the end of the period. The game's outlook changed little in the final quarter, giving the impression that Bauru would easily win. However, with two three-pointers from winger Jefferson and a steal by Guilherme Teichman that resulted in a layup by Hélio, the red-and-black team tied the game and sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, Flamengo took a 103-95 lead, but allowed Bauru to rally and ended up losing. Coach Paulo Chupeta lamented the team's lack of focus.
"We knew it would be a very tough game, especially since Bauru needed a win to improve their position in the table. We had the game in hand, but unfortunately, we wasted two foolish attacks and let the victory slip away. We lacked the composure to better choose our attack at the decisive moment, and we ended up paying the price. But the team showed grit and resilience to overcome a significant deficit in regulation time and take the match to extra time. Now it's time to forget this defeat and focus on Assis," said Chupeta, who hopes for a match with less pressure and a slightly less difficult one.
"They're a tough opponent that plays on the individuality of the three Americans. However, they're not in good form, so I hope our team sets our pace and makes the match more relaxed from the start. We remain in first place along with Brasília and will be looking for three wins in the remaining three rounds to finish first."
With ten points and three rebounds, center Wagner agrees with Chupeta that they lacked more attention at the end of the game, but emphasizes that the team made some defensive mistakes that need to be corrected against Assis.
"We messed up at the end and lost a game we practically won. Besides choosing some poor attacks, we allowed Larry and Fisher to shoot freely in the decisive moments. We know that every game is a final for us now, and we have to defend more aggressively against Assis. I think the wear and tear from the last few games also made a difference in overtime," explained the Flamengo center.
