After a great first half, Flamengo let the victory and the lead in the NBB (New Basketball Brazil) slip away on Wednesday night (February 23.02) in Brasília. The red-and-black team was defeated by the home team, 85-71, at the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium. With the result, the Brasília team took the lead in the standings and ended Flamengo's five-game winning streak. The Rio de Janeiro team now has 14 wins in 19 games and is in third place in the competition.
Forward/guard Marcelinho led the way with 26 points. Forward Teichmann also stood out with 14 points and 10 rebounds (a double-double). The game marked the return of forward/center Jefferson, who had been sidelined for a month recovering from an adductor injury in his right thigh. Meanwhile, the team was without American David Teague, who was suffering from a back injury.
Flamengo heads to São Paulo this Thursday (24.02) for the next two NBB matches. On Friday (25.02), the team faces Pinheiros, at 20 pm, and on Sunday (27.02), Paulistano, at 11 am.
"I think we had a good moment in the first half, but we ended up losing touch a bit, and they took advantage of that," Marcelinho said. "We weren't able to maintain the same consistency in attack," he added.
The two teams played a balanced game in the first quarter, and only at the end did Flamengo manage to open up a good lead, thanks to a three-pointer by Teichmann: 24-17. In the second quarter, Flamengo was winning by 10 points (39-29), but Brasília scored five points in a row and started a comeback (34-39). The Red-Black team went into halftime leading 41-37.
The Rio team continued to lead at the beginning of the second half, but, with a stronger defense, Brasília ended up tying at 47 x 47 and closing the third quarter at 57 x 63. Brasília opened up a 10-point lead at the beginning of the last part (57 x 67) and managed to maintain the good advantage until the end: 71 x 85.
Flamengo started with: Marcelinho (26), Helio (4), Duda (8), Teichmann (14) and Bábby (8). Fred (2), Átila (8), Jefferson (-), Wagner (1) and Guto (-) came on.
