Flamengo was very close to finishing among the top two in the group stage in Asunción, Paraguay, and securing a spot in the final stage of the 1st U-15 Boys' Youth Cup, which will be held this month at a venue yet to be determined. Hampered by the elimination of five fouls by center Douglas and wing Daniel in the decisive match against Sol da América, the red-and-black team couldn't handle the pressure from the home crowd and was defeated by the Paraguayans 70-60. With the defeat, the red-and-black boys, who the day before dispatched San José 68-55, finished the tournament in third place and were eliminated from the main South American competition in this category.
Despite the excellent performance of the Brazilian National Team's winger Léo Medeiros, who scored 19 points and 13 rebounds, the greater experience of the home team and the support of the Paraguayan fans, who filled the gym, ended up making the difference in the final minutes.
"We let the victory slip through our fingers. With five minutes left in the match, the score was tied (51-51), but Douglas and Daniel's eliminations with five fouls ended up being decisive in the end and we couldn't handle the pressure," explained coach Marcos Hygino, also known as Marquinho, who was voted the best coach of the competition by the tournament delegate and the other coaches.
Supervisor of the red-black basketball team, André Guimarães, lamented the team's elimination but recognizes that the outcome was very positive for the young red-black athletes, who now turn all their attention to competing in the State Championship.
"Of course, there's a feeling that we could have gone further, but the most important thing is the experience these boys gained this week. There were five games against strong South American teams, which served as preparation for the final stretch of the State Championship. We showed that the work is being done well, and we will certainly reap many rewards in the near future," said André.
