Without two of its main players – the wing/point guard and team captain Marcelinho and the center Bábby –, Flamengo was defeated by Obras Sanitárias, by 88 x 69, on Friday night (08.04), in its debut in the Interligas Tournament, in Mendoza, Argentina. The tournament brings together the four best teams from the first phase of the NBB (Franca, Pinheiros, Brasília and Flamengo) and the first four from the Argentine League (Obras Sanitárias, Peñarol, Libertad Sunchales and Atenas de Cordoba), divided into two groups.
This Saturday (09.04), the team returns to the court against Peñarol, who beat Brasília in the first round. The match will be played at 21 pm in Brasília, with broadcast on SPORTV 2.
With a neck injury radiating to his right arm, Marcelinho remained in Rio undergoing treatment for the playoffs. The forward/point guard even played the final games of the second half of the season, struggling. Bábby, meanwhile, is still recovering from a dislocated left shoulder suffered on March 25.03th in the match against Uberlândia at Gávea.
In the first quarter, Flamengo struggled defensively. As a result, the offense struggled, and Obras won the quarter 29-12. In the following quarter, Flamengo improved, hitting seven three-pointers and closing the deficit to 52-40. Point guard Fred was a standout performer, with four three-pointers, the last of which came from half court with the clock running down.
In the third quarter, Flamengo got closer (60 x 53), but made two mistakes in a row and Obras Sanitárias opened up again, closing the quarter at 70 x 55. In the last part, the current leaders of the Argentine Championship managed to hold on to the advantage and closed the game at 88 x 69.
Finishing fourth in the NBB qualifying round, Flamengo automatically secured a spot in the playoffs. The opponent in the quarterfinals, starting on the 24th, will be determined after the round of 16, between the teams ranked 5th to 12th. The Interleague Tournament is serving as preparation for the playoffs.
