Flamengo suffered its second defeat in the second phase of the Liga de las Américas, in Veracruz (MEX). On Friday night (04.02), the red-and-black team was defeated by Peñarol (ARG), 90-76. In its debut, the team lost to Halcones Rojos (MEX). Flamengo ends its participation in the competition on Saturday night (05.02), against Capitanes de Arecibo, from Puerto Rico, at 22 pm (Brasília time). Qualification for the final phase, in March, will depend on a combination of results, starting with a victory for Halcones over Capitanes, who face each other in the early hours of this Saturday (Brasília time - Friday night in Mexico).
Off the court, the atmosphere was friendly between coaches and former teammates on the Argentine national team, Gonzalo Garcia of Flamengo and Sergio Hernandez of Peñarol. Gonzalo was Hernandez's assistant coach for six years. But in the game, as always happens in Brazil-Argentina duels, the rivalry was intense. Argentine Leonardo Gutierrez led the way with 27 points. For the Rio de Janeiro team, Marcelinho scored 25.
The first half was evenly matched. Flamengo had the biggest lead in the first quarter: 9-5. The two teams tied at 17-17, and Peñarol finished the quarter ahead: 19-17. Early in the second quarter, the Argentine team scored 10 consecutive points. Flamengo managed to close the gap and even got closer to 31-33. But the first half ended 37-33 in favor of the Argentines.
In the third quarter, Peñarol opened up a 58-45 lead and closed the quarter at 64-52. With the Argentines' significant lead, it was difficult for Flamengo to reverse the score in the final quarter. The result: 90-76 for Sergio Hernandez's team.
"I think both teams played evenly for the first 30 minutes. From then on, we started making a lot of mistakes and it was difficult to turn things around. We still need a little more time for the team to get used to me and I to them. But anyway, I think everyone fought hard," explained coach Gonzalo Garcia, who took over the team in January. "Tomorrow (Saturday) is another day and we're going to go out there to win," he said.

Flamengo started with Marcelinho (25), Helio (2), Teichmann (5), Teague (10) and Bábby (12). Entered: Guto (-), Wagner (-), Fred (6), Duda (16) and Átila (-).
