Flamengo overcame the fatigue of the marathon of games in the South American League and NBB and took the first step towards the finals of the State Basketball Championship. On Tuesday night (07.12), the team, which is seeking its sixth championship, beat Cabo Frio 76 x 65, at the Tijuca Tênis Clube gymnasium, in the first match of the tournament's semifinals. The second game will be this Wednesday (08.12), in Cabo Frio, at the same time.
If necessary, a third match will take place on Friday (10.12), again in Rio. The tournament finals will take place on the 15th and 16th, in Tijuca. Tijuca, by the way, secured the first spot in the final by beating Macaé.
In Tuesday's game, Marcelinho was the top scorer with 27 points. Shooting guard Duda, who is still recovering from a sprained right ankle, was rested.
Flamengo started off with a bang, taking a 10-0 lead, but lost focus and allowed Cabo Frio to score 11 straight points and turn the game around to 10-11. The game remained balanced, and the team from the lakes region finished the first quarter ahead, 17-18. At the start of the second quarter, Flamengo took the lead again, opening up a 10-point lead (28-18). Cabo Frio still managed to get closer (30-29), but Flamengo went into halftime leading 41-31.
In the second half, the red-and-black team returned to the court with Bábby – who missed the last two NBB matches due to a sprained right foot – replacing Átila. Recovered, the center helped the team open up an 18-point lead (60-42), their largest lead to date. Flamengo held onto their lead until the end of the quarter: 63-47. Despite wasting a few counterattacks, Flamengo maintained the lead throughout the final half, winning 76-65.
"I think the team played to its limit. Everyone was feeling the marathon of games and we managed to manage it using our experience. Tomorrow the fatigue will be even greater and we will need to play more consciously," said point guard Fred.
Pivot Bábby celebrated his return to the court.
"I'm 100%, happy to be back. But I think the team is very tired and we had some problems in defense. I'm sure tomorrow will be much better," he said.
Flamengo started with Marcelinho (27), Helio (2), Fred (8), Teichmann (13) and Átila (1). Entered: Jefferson (11), Guto (1), Wagner (2), Bábby (11).
