Flamengo took to the court on Monday night (January 21.01st) in Belo Horizonte to face Minas. A victory for the red-and-blacks would have continued the team's trajectory at the start of the 2012/2013 NBB season. And, with a good dose of emotion, the victory came. The score of 105 to 90 consolidated Flamengo's 14th consecutive victory in the competition.
Early in the match, Flamengo tried to employ a tactic that has yielded excellent results: starting at full throttle on the attack, imposing its pace from the outset. Flamengo opened the scoring with a two-pointer from Caio.
Next, Douglas Nunes hit a three-pointer for Minas. The game was back-and-forth, and Olivinha, the game's leading scorer alongside Beal, scored a three-pointer for Flamengo in the fourth minute. In the sixth minute, Minas coach Raul Togni called a timeout. Upon returning to the court, Borders hit three consecutive baskets, forcing Flamengo coach José Neto to call a timeout.
The first quarter ended with Flamengo just three points ahead of their opponents, a score that reflected the match's tight start and suggested that Minas was aiming to halt Flamengo's winning streak. Could it be?
The match restarted and the balance between the teams remained, however, Flamengo came back a little more focused and increased the advantage at the end of the second quarter.
The game heated up in the third period. Minas closed the deficit to just two points with a three-pointer from Borders, followed by a two-pointer from Beal, making it 67-65. Minas continued to press, and eight minutes into the third quarter, Betinho's three-pointer turned the game around for Minas, making it 70-69.
The Flamengo fans, though a minority in the gym, continued to chant and cheer for the team. And Flamengo's players reciprocated their support by retaking the lead at the end of the third quarter: 75-72.
When everything indicated that the match would take "dramatic turns" at the end, Flamengo scored five points in just two minutes, with Marquinhos, with three, and Olivinha, and extended the lead.
With two minutes remaining, the Flamengo fans were already celebrating their imminent victory. Final: Flamengo 105 x Minas 90, in another brilliant performance by the team led by coach José Neto.
Winger Marquinhos, one of the players of the match, celebrated another positive result. "We're playing well together, and that's why the results are coming. There's no point in me playing well if the team isn't in sync."
With the victory against Minas, Flamengo has now won 14 matches in the same number, while the Minas Gerais team has lost eighth in 15 matches.
For Olivinha, the campaign is a result of training. "We're very happy with the win. Neto has been giving us a lot of heat, but we're working really hard to make it happen. Today we didn't have a great defense, but we were very happy on offense and got another win," he said. The power forward had a double-double with 25 points and eleven rebounds, alongside center Caio Torres (23/14).
Flamego returns to the court next Thursday (24.01), at 20pm, against Paulistano, at the Tijuca gym.
