Diego Marques was named the best player of the first stage of the Basketball Development League (LDB) by the National Basketball League. He was also named the best defender. The two-meter-tall winger, born in 1992, ranks third in the LDB's first stage efficiency rankings and is the seventh-highest scorer so far.
"Diego is a very high-quality player. He has great reading of the game and a wealth of resources. He can play point guard or on the wing, is a relentless defender, and also has a good three-point shot," said coach Paulo Chupeta.
The other three Flamengo players in the Top 25 are: Chupeta (5th), Douglas Correa (8th), and Gabriel Andrade (17th). Flamengo finished the first stage of the Brazilian Development League in first place in the qualifying phase, winning nine of their nine matches. For the "Mais Querido" (Most Beloved), the second stage of the LDB begins on July 31st, when the club faces Goiânia.
"I expect a difficult phase because we'll be playing opponents from the other group. I hope we can impose our attacking rhythm even more with Gegê's return. Our defense is already great, we've conceded few points, and that's what sets Flamengo apart from the other teams. If we win the next five games, we'll take a big step towards finishing first and potentially reaching the final in Rio," said Paulo Chupeta.
