Fla goes in search of the second South American basketball title

Flamengo's journey to its second South American League title begins this Thursday (November 03.11). The 2009 champions will face UTE (EQU) at 20:30 p.m. (Brasília time) at the Carlos A. Cerutti Municipal Gymnasium in Córdoba, Argentina, in the first round of the tournament's first phase. Sportv 2 will broadcast live.
After the Ecuadorians, Flamengo takes on Boston College (CHI) on Friday (November 04.11th) at 20:30 pm (Brasília time) and Atenas de Córdoba (ARG) on Saturday (November 05.11th) at 20 pm (Brasília time). The top two teams in the group qualify for the final hexagonal.
"Our first goal is to secure qualification for the final stage. Then we'll focus on the title," said coach Gonzalo Garcia, assessing Flamengo's first opponent. "It's a team that was built for this tournament. It has the base of Mavort (the Ecuadorian team Flamengo faced in the last edition of the League) and also has three good foreigners. So, I think it could be a tough match," he added.
At 31 years old, Argentine Kammerichs, one of Flamengo's main reinforcements this season, celebrated the fact that he was playing "at home".
"I'll have extra motivation playing in my country. Plus, I know my family and friends will be watching the game here, so it will be a great pleasure for me. My expectations are very high," said the power forward, who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics with Argentina.
Kammerichs also warned that the first opponent was unknown to the red-blacks:
"Since the team was formed for this competition, we don't know how they play together. We'll have to stay alert and do our job, always paying close attention to the defensive system," he said.
The South American League will be star Leandrinho's first official competition for Flamengo. Since joining the team, he has played in six friendlies. Flamengo will also welcome the return of captain Marcelinho, who was with the Brazilian national team at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara and joined the team in Córdoba.
